Aug 11, 2017 · For Briggs ohv you turn engine over in clockwise regular direction until a cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. This means both valves closed and piston moving air out the spark plug hole. Then you go 1/4 inch past TDC. That's what briggs says. You can go 1/2 even 1 inch. The exact 1/4 inch past of piston moving down is not that critical.
