Fair History. The Steuben County Fair is the oldest continually running fair in the United States. Originated in 1819 there were 9 categories for judging with prizes given to exhibitors of cattle, sheep and produce. Horse racing was also an attraction. The original grandstand was built in 1872 followed by a second grandstand which burned in 1966.A decision was made one week ago by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County to no longer allow its 4-H program to participate in the County Fair held every August in Bath. In an interview on FLX Morning on Finger Lakes News Radio, Steuben’s Extension Director Tess McKinley explained what led to their decision.
