May 1, 2008 · The Model 39-A did not come out until 1939/1940. The 39-A's up to 1964 had a single letter prefix to the serial number, and up to 1968, had a two letter prefix to the serial number. We need that letter (s) prefix to fix the date of manufacture. Your first digit, the "8" may be the letter "B" or a deep stamped "P" or "R".
Greetings! I just acquired a golden 39a and its serial number doesnt correspond to the date info I've been seeing. Serial 731224xx. No letter prefix to be found. Also, 100-73=27 which doesnt help... Feb 22, 2012 · The early model 39 came out right after WWI in the early 1920's. It had no prefix, and I can't give you a serial numbber range, but most are seen with 3 digit serial number if they are first year. The 39a is very similar in it's first year, as both had casehardened receivers, but the 39a had a round barrel, vs. the octagon barrel of the 39.
Dec 23, 2021 · I have a 1957 39A with the letter "P" (early 1957) in the serial number, plainly struck and not a partial "R" (late 1957). I don't see it on your list but did find it over at the Marlin Firearms Collector Association site. On their list compared to yours between 1957 and 1964 there are several lettered differences as noted.

The Genfield's used the same serial numbers as the Marlin's. The model 57, might have a 2 letter code on the barrel, if so you can go to the part on the serial number sheets, that says Non 39A's 22's.
