Layton Lake I don't know how hard people have personally had it with this mission on Layton Lakes, but I just wanted to share how I kinda cheesed it, and completed the mission in under a couple of minutes on my Series X copy of the game.
They're just arseholes to find. I've had some decent luck finding resting zones for them around the outside of lakes. Try times like 10-12 and the mushroom shaped lake in cheela in the northeast corner. Note that they're not at the lakeshore but a good 100-200 meter perimeter. Otherwise hunt lakeshores around balmont and willipeg from 19:00 ...Having heard gunshots in the distance, you must investigate the source of the commotion. Ignore the small lakes at your own peril. ALL lakes big and small are worth checking at least once. The 4-5 biggest lakes usually have at least 2 whitetail drink zones on them. I say usually because the 3rd playthrough, I do have only a single herd living near High Lake, and they drink on the river for some reason instead of at the lake.

The first map I cleared was Layton Lakes, the mission where I had to kill black bears with a .270 and 100 quick kill took me quite a while. This might be partly because I was very new to the game, but I found it hard to get enough penetration on the bear when it was doing anything but standing up on its hind legs to hit heart or lungs.
