The Royal Playa del Carmen is a beautiful hotel but the town of Playa del Carmen is much less lively than that of Cancun. I have stayed at both. Cancun is more of a "city" atmosphere and you don't get much of a feel of what Mexico is. Playa del Carmen is much calmer and tends to be less people. The beaches there are just as beautiful.

This may not be a popular opinion since this is a Cancun message board but if I were you I'd go to Cheweng on Samui. Don't get me wrong. I love Cancun. I live here and have for about 12 years. Cancun is great and I'm sure you'll have a fabulous trip if you choose to come here. You are right. Cancun is VERY hot and humid in August.
