I typically get a few days of "flashing smiley" which means estrogen is going up and ovulation is coming soon, followed by a "solid smiley" which means my LH surge is happening and ovulation should happen within 24-48 hours. They are expensive, but I like them because it gives me a much earlier signal to expect that ovulation is coming soon.

The smiley face flashing or not indicates the LH surge being detected. It shouldn't matter if it's solid or not. If LH surge not detected it should just be a circle and no smiley face at all.
