A BTB LFN 405 gr over a good dose of 3031. The recoil was more than a little "snappy", more like "brisk" and exhilarating to say the least. In my Marlin 1895 the same load is pretty "snappy". The .45-70 Govt is very effective out to around 150 yards with minimal bullet drop, but it’s capable of great accuracy and longer range shooting as well. Using modern, smokeless powder, most of the ammunition manufacturers currently produce a wide variety of loads of varying power for the .45-70. If you decide to shoot up the surplus powder in your 45-70, I'd start less than 20 grains using the cereal filler and see how things go. Might want to use a magnum rifle primer to ignite the hard to start powder if things work out but have unburnt powder in the bore. I bought it a both Bass Pro and Brownells this last year, I use it for many calibers. I use it for 300, 350 and 405 jacketed bullet loads.
