The only honors society's that are worth buying into are Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. PBK is the most selective, I think being in the top 10% in your college/school. When I got invited years ago, I thought it was a scam, looked into it a little more, and bought the membership. If you get nationally-recognized organization, joining one isn't a bad thing, but most are just small organizations which either do fail, or are just glorified "discount" programs with no real academic rigor. I've seen "honors" societies that only require a 3.0 (B average). Although lack of membership doesn't indicate that the society is 100% a scam, it should warn you to proceed with caution.
