Johnson outboard timing adjustment.

What is the easiest way to set the timing on a 1975 Johnson 3 cyl 2 stroke outboard enging. I have noticed vibration and it sounds like it may be missing. Can this be done without a timing light? I have noticed a couple of backfires when starting which leads me to believe it could very well be the timing. Thanks for your help.Jun 17, 2012 · Jun 17, 2012. #2. Re: Throttle Cam Adjustment. The rod length is determined by what is known as "pickup timing". Ignition Timing should be TDC when the cam contacts the roller. If is is not....then adjust the rod length. Jul 30, 2018 · I have a 1994 Johnson 30 hp tiller electric start. I am trying to adjust the max timing stopper because when I got the outboard the stopper was adjusted 1/2 to 3/4 inch away from the edge of the timing plate. Put a timing light on #1, and place the timing linkage in idle position. Crank the engine, and note the reading. Should be around 4*ATDC. While the engine is cranking, move the linkage manually, watching the timing move using the timing light. It will move on the flywheel toward that 18* mark.

Then push the magneto control arm all the way until it hits the full advance stop. Look up underneath the edge of the flywheel and see if mark "a" on the flywheel is lined up with mark "b" on the timing plate base. That is full advanced. I don't see how your timing could be off if you never touched it. Jason2tpa.manual says idle 4 deg wide open throttle 20deg. At idle its 4 deg minus side, but when take rpms up it moves across TDC and up into the positive side?????

If the throttle linkage, timing advance, and carb settings are not done in the proper sequence you end up chasing yourself.
